The foundation of all business decisions—from who sits next to the boss at the weekly staff meeting to who makes more money, who gets a meeting, who gets promoted, and who gets the best office (especially who gets the best office). Having the ability to befriend and gain the trust of those one will one day betray (or the ability to know who can be screwed over with minimal repercussions) is a key component of mastering office politics. It is the reason why those who kiss ass, play golf, and laugh a lot do so well in corporate America.
